Bindi Bottoms
Reba Daniel Journalist, Bangalore

“I am a spiritual person, and when that is coupled with a deep trust in the wisdom of the Universe, I believe it makes every woman unique and strong. I trusted my inner intuition, and explored the options of a natural childbirth without any intervention. It took me a lot of research and preparation to actually take this decision - to have my first child without any medical intervention. I have experienced pure bliss during my delivery and want to share that experience with you. Our bodies are capable of miracles.

In my mind, it was a scarier situation to go into a hospital and experience the various medical interventions commonly practiced during hospital birth. I did not believe this was best for the child. We tend to forget that the child is an individual too, whether it is an infant or is yet to be born. So I sought more knowledge, both positive and negative, on how women used to birth before medical science came up with the current norms. I was surprised at the volume of information available, thanks to technology. I made the most of it to seek more answers and finally decided to trust my intuition and body. This was possible because of a supportive, rather non-interfering, family who trusted me and I trusted the Almighty to guide me through the process.

I learned how I could help myself through a healthy pregnancy and practiced it. I came across the concept of the Lotus Birth which made full sense logically and scientifically too. Even as I sought information, I was a little anxious as to experiencing how it actually would be, since I had not decided where and how I would birth. But 10 days to the delivery, we decided to bring the child into the world at home, inspired by the freebirth stories of other mothers I connected with on the internet. My husband’s support made all of this possible; he too made a huge effort to educate himself about the whole procedure.

The process was liberating. It was slow but completely natural. I paced through the rooms in the house and on the terrace! I was restless, but peaceful throughout, trusting that I would be shown what to do when I needed to do it. There was a total feeling of being within an experience that was much larger than me - a feeling of an unfolding of one of the most primal reasons I was a woman and what I experienced was pure bliss. I was deeply aware of every change that was happening inside of me as my child came into this world. The most shocking moment was to realize that the just-born baby is well-aware of its surroundings. Just as we were about to wash the placenta, the few-minutes-old baby was suddenly ‘alert’ of what was happening to her.

The entire experience of natural birth enhanced my spirituality. My thought process changed. My persona changed. I could trust myself, my guts, a lot more now, and became a much more fearless and trusting person. I can now understand better some of the ‘mad’ people we encounter on the road. They are blissful. Like them, I no longer have fear, or seek external acceptance. I advocate natural birth because I have experienced it. My angel Eva is 8 years into this world now.”
